Servants’ Quarters

Recently a miscommunication about how many people we had coming on a retreat, ended up with me in a strange room in an odd location.  It felt cut off from everything else, had a slightly spooky stairwell just outside the door that lead directly down to the kitchen, and boasted of a very reassuring statue of St. Joseph in the stairwell.  At some point it dawned on me–this must be the servants’ quarters.

I wonder about what it really means to be God’s servant.  To be Love’s servant.

A song that seems to pop up during significant transitions in my life gets me thinking about this servitude…

Will you let me be your servant,
Let me be as Christ to you?
Pray that I might have the grace
To let you be my servant too.

We are pilgrims on the journey,
We are brothers on the road.
We are here to help each other
Walk the mile and bear the load.

I will hold the Christ light for you
In the night time of your fear.
I will hold my hand out to you
Speak the the peace you long to hear.

I will weep when you are weeping
When you laugh, I’ll laugh with you.
I will share your joy and sorrow
Till we’ve seen this journey through.

When we sing to God in heaven
We shall find such harmony.
Born to all we’ve known together
Of Christ’s love and agony.

Will you let me be your servant,
Let me be as Christ to you?
Pray that I might have the grace
To let you be my servant too.

What might God be inviting me to from my servant’s quarters?
